POSITION SUMMARY

This full-time science teaching position will focus on physics or chemistry, with possible teaching responsibilities in other scientific disciplines based on the expertise of the candidate. They will have ongoing contact with and direct responsibility for the academic and social life of students on campus ( in loco parentis ) and will involve specific responsibilities that include coaching or other afternoon program involvement, possible residential life duty, and student advising. The successful candidate will be deeply invested in a student-centered pedagogy providing authentic, hands-on learning experiences, will have enthusiasm and appreciation for working with adolescents, will be a collaborative member of the teaching faculty, and will desire to deepen their teaching practice through innovative ideas and research-based best practices. With Teaching Faculty status comes the expectation of total involvement in the lives of students at a boarding school, contributing to the life of the campus through various means inside and outside the classroom. Housing may or may not be available.  Other responsibilities, such as dorm duty, will be required with on-campus housing.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching:

  • 3 sections of science with a primary focus in physics or chemistry

Afternoon Program:

  • 2 seasons of coaching or equivalent

Residential Life Program:

  • Dorm parenting or equivalent, depending on housing status

Student Life:

  • Advisor to no more than 7 students beginning in the second year at Governor’s 
  • Weekend chaperone and other duties
  • Must show a demonstrated interest, through teaching practices and/or professional development experiences, in creating equitable and inclusive spaces and in pursuing social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work through the curriculum

B.S. is required, masters level preferred; Chemistry and/or Physics teaching experience is preferred; experience in coaching and/or playing interscholastic athletics, directing, and/or experience on stage in the performing arts is preferred. Must be able to work collegially, be committed to working in a di verse community, have experience working and communicating with diverse populations, enjoy working with young people in a boarding school environment, and have a valid driver’s license.
