  Summary

 

The essential function of the position is to stenographically record felony court proceedings including trials, provide Realtime (when necessary for judges), and produce transcripts on a timely basis. The position is responsible for reporting court proceedings, performing research and proofreading and editing reported proceedings in order to produce quality transcripts. The position works under the general supervision of the Director of Administrative Services. The position requires someone who is self-motivated, has a keen eye for detail and completes assignments timely. All Official Court Reporters are paid a monthly salary but are not paid appearance fees or for transcripts. However, a Luminex writer, laptop, maintenance of equipment, CAT software, and current updates are all provided. Also included are State of Florida government employee benefits. 

 

Examples of Work Performed

 

  • Working under the supervision of the Director of Administrative Services
  • Records court proceedings stenographically utilizing a Stenograph Luminex and Case Catalyst software
  • Reading back segments of court proceedings using various methods of court reporting technologies including stenographic notes and/or real-time translation via computer
  • Transcribes and edits stenographic and real-time notes to transcript form in compliance with applicable standards, regulations and statutes
  • Proofreading transcripts and researching information as necessary to ensure accuracy of information (i.e., verify correct spelling of names, places, medical, scientific, and legal terms)
  • Prints and binds certified completed transcripts, and backs up transcripts for archiving purposes
  • Archives digital stenographic notes; maintains, updates, and edits personal dictionary; and maintains accurate logs of each day’s proceedings
  • Assisting with training of other departmental personnel as needed

  • Completes and submits statistical reports to designated personnel
  • Traveling to five courthouses located in Palm Beach County to perform duties, as may be required: Criminal Justice Complex, Main Judicial Complex, North County Courthouse, South County Courthouse or West County Courthouse

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Associate’s degree or the equivalent of two years of college or vocational school education in court reporting is required.

 

Two years of courtroom court reporting experience. 

 

This position requires a valid certificate as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or higher. 


Preferred:

Real Time Reporter certification and capability.

 

Relevant experience and/or education may substitute for the recommended minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.

 

  KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of the Florida State Courts system
  • Knowledge of legal, medical, scientific and technological terminology
  • Knowledge of transcript formatting rules
  • Knowledge of court reporting methods including (but not limited to) shorthand, stenography, computer-aided transcription, real-time court reporting, audio tape recording and digital audio recording
  • Ability to handle machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items
  • Ability to type accurately and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other court personnel and outside agencies, legal professionals, litigants, and the general public
